Created in 1962 and launched in 1972 to celebrate the maison's bicentenary, La Grande Dame is a tribute to Madame Clicquot, an emblematic, strong and inspirational woman. In 1805, on the death of her husband, she took over the reins of her Maison at just 27, at a time when women had no place in the business world. A free and ambitious woman, she dared to say “ I want my Maison to have a leading role both in New York and in St. Petersburg ”. Her signature is today the symbol of Veuve Cliquot in the world.

Our Maison currently owns one of the most important vineyards in the region, both in terms of surface area and quality. The 390 hectares are divided into 12 of the 17 Grand Crus and 20 of the 44 Premier Crus that make up the entire Champagne region. An exceptional heritage built over the centuries starting from the first parcels and plots planted by the founder and then expanded by the hand of the various Veuve Clicquot executives. A heritage that boasts above all the imprint of Madame Clicquot. The latter make up only one third of the total vineyard area of the Champagne wine region. The planting of the vineyards is established for the single parcels according to the soil, the climate and the exposure. The Veuve Clicquot vineyard is made up of 47% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Noir and 17% Pinot Meunier. The vineyards of the Maison are positioned along the gentle hillsides, to benefit from the reduced thickness of the soil and the best sun exposure. Since its inception, Veuve Clicquot has built strong relationships with the winemakers of Champagne. As producers of grapes and white wines, they bring a constant and quality supply to the Maison.
