This portion of the countryside has always been linked to the production of local wines, the white and red of Assisi, once excellent wines without a blazon which, a few years ago, obtained recognition of their quality level with the DOC. A few years ago the Migliosi family, for a long time among the most shrewd and qualified local producers, acquired a splendid estate in the locality in question, the Ponte Rosso, with prestigious vineyards and excellent exposure. Overlooked by the imposing mass of the Sacred Convent of San Francesco and with a spectacular view of the town of Assisi, the estate winds along the valley near the stream. Last but not least, exactly at the beginning of 2020, the Migliosi family decided to acquire vineyards in Gualdo Cattaneo, in the Montefalco DOC area, thus starting the production of two new red wines: Rosso di Montefalco DOC ( a blend) and Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG (100% Sagrantino). Montefalco and the surrounding area are undoubtedly the most prestigious wine area of Umbria and Sagrantino is becoming increasingly popular both in Italy and abroad due to its uniqueness due to this ancient grape variety impossible to find elsewhere in the rest of Italy. Thanks to an accurate redevelopment and selection work, the vineyards are now able to produce high quality blends with which the fine wines typical of the Assisi area are obtained. To guarantee the highest quality level, the grapes are harvested by hand and selected with cutting-edge technologies directly in the cellar. Furthermore, the entire production is about to be converted into ORGANIC so as to enhance and certify the intact beauty and authenticity of the territory. The stretch of plain that divides the lower slopes of Mount Subasio from the offshoots of the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli is still intact, with the exception of a few rural buildings from the Middle Ages. The Tescio torrent that crosses it flows placidly towards the nearby Chiascio river to become its tributary at the height of the former Benedictine monastery of S. Paolo delle Abbadesse.

Rosso di Montepulciano is a Tuscan wine with which Poliziano makes a precise choice, based on the quality and identity of the territory. Instead of downgrading the grapes registered for the production of Nobile di Montepulciano, the winery goes beyond this simple operation - which often leads to selecting the least valuable grapes for the Rossi di Montepulciano - by identifying some vineyards with peculiar characteristics precisely to give rise to this denomination. This is how this young and fruity red is given life, with a good body and a more than pleasant sip.

Method: It comes from an assembly between Sangiovese and a great international variety, Merlot. The plants grow in vineyards located at a height above sea level between 280 and 350 meters, characterized by a clayey and silty subsoil, where there is also the presence of skeleton. The must ferments in stainless steel conical vats at a controlled temperature, with punching down that integrates the pumping over. Fermentation and maceration have a total duration of 12 days. Then follows the refinement, which has a duration of 8 months and is carried out in steel and in large barrels, for 20% of the total mass.

Features: This Red of Montepulciano develops in the glass with an intense and persistent ruby colour.
The Nobile di Montepulciano selection 'Asinone' by Poliziano is produced only in the best vintages and the number of bottles produced reflects the quality of the vintage itself. It ages in barrique for 16-18 months before being bottled. On average, the production is around 20,000-40,000 bottles.

Method: This wine, produced in the municipality of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, is obtained from grapes 100% Sangiovese from a single vineyard facing south, south-west and located on rolling hills at about 350-400 meters above sea level. The vines, which have different ages, are trained using the spurred cordon method on soils rich in skeleton characterized by clayey-loamy soils. The winery is a family-run business, owner of about 165 hectares of vineyards, today managed by Federico Carletti who, taking over the reins from his father, manages in a few years to propose an innovative and modern production philosophy, becoming one of the most appreciated names in the whole Tuscany. “Asinone” Nobile di Montepulciano di Poliziano is produced with carefully selected and hand-picked grapes in small crates towards the end of September. The bunches, taken to the cellar, are destemmed and delicately pressed to then carry out the alcoholic fermentation, with frequent daily pumping over, in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature with a maceration on the skins for about 20- 25 days. Subsequently, the racking off is carried out with pressing, after which the wine is aged in French oak tonneau for at least 16-18 months before being bottled and ready for marketing.

Characteristics: Poliziano's Nobile di Montepulciano "Asinone" has a beautiful bright ruby red color. Intense aromas of red fruit appear on the nose, including cherry and black cherry, floral notes of sour cherry and violet, hints of aromatic herbs, including laurel, oregano and rhubarb vegetables, before veering on slight hints of cinchona, coffee and resin. In the mouth it is rich, intense, full and enveloping, characterized by a velvety but well-present tannic texture and good freshness. This from the Poliziano winery is a complex and refined red with a persistent finish and played on notes of coffee.

Advice and pairings: Wine of great longevity, already remarkable if drunk now, but which we suggest you leave to rest in the cellar to better appreciate the great qualities that will mature over time. You can let it rest in the cellar for even more than 15 years. A demanding wine to be used on the most prestigious occasions, it finds its best match with savory main courses and aged cheeses. It is worth experimenting with the combination with "tegamaccio", a lake fish dish typical of the border area between Umbria and Tuscany, which is particularly tasty and therefore suitable.

SIZE / WEIGHT: 0,75 l bottles

ORIGIN: Tuscany.

GRAPES: 100% Sangiovese.

ALCOHOL: 14.5% vol.

SERVING TEMPERATURE: Temperature between 12/18°C.

STORAGE METHOD: in a cool place away from sunlight.

SPECIFIC NOTES: Contains sulphites.

PRODUCER: Poliziano - Montepulciano Stazione (SI).

Poliziano Winery History

Poliziano was born in 1961 when Dino Carletti bought the first nucleus of 22 hectares moved by a romantic and passionate vision for his native land. The company has grown over the years to reach the current 170 hectares all planted with vineyards. Its name is a tribute to the humanist and poet Angelo Ambrogini (1454-1494), known as the "Poliziano". Federico Carletti, Dino's son, after completing his agricultural studies, took over the company management in 1980. He immediately made a professional and philosophical breakthrough by studying and working only proprietary grapes (“Estate Winery”). Concentrated on quality viticulture, modern but respectful of the environment and tradition, he immediately obtains a Vino Nobile of great depth and quality from the high-density vineyards. Federico in pursuing quality and excellence in his wines has always renewed the techniques both in the countryside and in the cellar. International varieties were planted in the 1990s, but at the same time the local variety par excellence, Sangiovese, which in the Montepulciano area is known by the name of "Prugnolo Gentile", was studied and exalted. Strengthened by the great knowledge of the potential of the Montepulciano area, Federico, for almost twenty years now, has concentrated on the maximum exaltation and expression of the same in his wines; letting typicality and naturalness express themselves. This is why he dedicated himself to the production of "cru" of great notoriety. The family passion for wine and the territory continues with Francesco and Maria Stella, who today act as Federico's fundamental advisers to interpret and face current and future challenges.

It is to the prugnolo gentile grapes that characterize the Montepulciano area that Poliziano is given the most attentive care so that they express all the potential of a territory with a recognized wine-growing vocation. The result is a structured, long-lived Vino Nobile di Montepulciano with intense but not unnecessarily caricatured aromas, which faithfully express its profoundly Tuscan origins and the ancient link between land, man and culture. A Vino Nobile faithful to tradition.

Features: The aromas are intense with marked notes of blackberries, plums, sour cherries and hints of spices and tobacco. On the palate it is structured, velvety, enveloping and supported by an elegant freshness.

Advice and pairings: To enjoy it at its best, we advise you to let the wine 'breathe' at least 15 -30 minutes before serving it. Wine throughout the meal, it goes well with rich typical dishes of the Tuscan tradition.
The Componimento Paglione comes from a careful selection of the grapes followed by a delicate destemming andvinification in classic red at controlled temperature. During the fermentation phase, the must is subjected to pumping over and punching down processes which guarantee the desired extraction of the constituents present in the skins.

And in those years, very few began a winemaking adventure in Montalcino. Today, thanks to an exceptional terroir and to men who have believed in it for decades, Mastrojanni is one of the most respected Brunello di Montalcino companies by connoisseurs. These places have been sparsely populated and little cultivated throughout the history of humanity: the earth is therefore virgin, clean, free of any pollutant that, at the hands of man, could have defaced it. In this land, in 1975, the lawyer Gabriele Mastrojanni bought the San Pio and Loreto farms and decided to plant the first vineyards which still partly produce our wines today. Others, before him, starting with the pioneer Biondi-Santi, had had the same experience and the area had clearly answered that the best vine for these lands is Sangiovese Grosso. Mastrojanni, wanting to make a great Brunello, planted almost exclusively Sangiovese. In those same years Maurizio Castelli, still our oenologist today, became the company's reference consultant. The Mastrojanni family, who lived in Rome and came to Montalcino occasionally, decided to put their trust in Andrea Machetti who offered to follow the evolution of the company full-time. Andrea started in 1992 and his passionate work allowed Mastrojanni to grow abroad and in production, perhaps beyond the initial dream of being a lawyer. Today a point of reference for the company and the Illy group. Andrea Machetti in 1992 took over the reins of the company to transform it into one of the most respected producers of Montalcino. Of few words, he now knows deeply every vine in the company, Andrea is always there, following every single detail and knows that this is the only way to make a great wine: to be at his service. Maurizio Castelli, world-renowned oenologist for his great wines, is like Andrea and like all of us an "anti-interventionist": he tries to let the wine make its own evolution, dictated by his nature. But it is clear that a winemaker is like a doctor, and he must understand when there is a problem and know how to cure it. His trick, like that of the best doctors, is "prevention". That is, working in advance, through careful and continuous presence in the company and systematic checks to preserve the wine. Thanks to the approach given by Andrea and Maurizio, Mastrojanni's wines continue to be an excellence of the Montalcino area.
